Wondering what to wear for your engagement photos? You're not alone. Brides spend plenty of time planning the looks that will show up on everything from their save the dates to the walls of their first house. Before you scan your closet or hit the mall, consider these top tips on what to wear for your engagement shoot.

  1. Choose your outfits ahead of time

Trust me, you don’t want to be scrambling around trying to create outfits because nothing will look good or nothing will fit. Make the time to go through your closet or time to go shopping at least 1 week before your engagement session. Lay it all out next to each other and see if you like the combination.

2. Consider your location

Think about where your engagement session is going to be. Is your engagement session at the beach? Sticking to neutrals and going barefoot is perfect! Are you going to be shooting in a city or urban area? Then brighter colors or a more “dressed up” approach may work with the setting better. It doesn’t hurt to look at shoots from similar locations and see what other people wore. Check out past couples here.

3. Complement Each Other, But Don't Match

Matching outfits and patterned prints aren't ideal for portrait sessions. When deciding how you and your partner will dress, look for complementary colors and solid prints. Try to stay away from anything too busy, as it can be an unnecessary distraction in photos.

4. Wear Clothes That Make You Feel Like You

Express your personal style—the more confident you feel, the better your photos will turn out.

Now's not the time to pull out a beaded ball gown if you're a T-shirt and jeans kind of girl. You should feel comfortable in the outfit you choose.

Choose Pastels, Cool Colors, and Neutral Tones

Consider wearing pastels, cool hues, or neutral tones, then add a pop of bright color with your accessories. There are certain colors that tend to reflect onto your face that you would want to avoid. some of these colors are neons and reds.
