Working with family members can sometimes be stressful & complicating. We've been asked if working together has caused arguments, stress or disagreements. I can honestly & proudly say, it hasn't! The respect we have for one another as husband & wife trumps any disagreement we may have while working together. Don't get me wrong, there are times we don't agree over business decisions or certain images but because of our deep values of marriage, we talk it through, we solve the problem without hurting any feelings.
The most surprising outcome of this business is how it's made our marriage STRONGER.
We are much more emotionally intimate & vulnerable with one another. What I mean by this is, we see each other's "flaws" and mistakes in photography and we help each other become better. Photography has connected us in a way we never imagined. Our communication is so efficient now, we are constantly talking and sharing our thoughts, personal life & business. And the respect we have for eachother is on a whole other level now. We find ourselves complimenting each other daily and noticing the little things. Our business is to thank because when I see a picture I really like, I tell Jerico. It makes me proud to brag about his talent and vice versa. We build each other up as we continue to grow our business.
Who better to be your business partner than the person you chose to spend the rest of your life with?
Speaking of communication, working together on wedding days actually gives us a major advantage being husband & wife. We are able to communicate with hand gestures & looks. It's pretty funny, I know exactly what he wants me to do in a moment or where he wants me to go simply by the way he's looking at me. You married couples know what I mean.
He's my business partner but more importantly, he's my life partner.
I gotta give Jerico some props, he's been so patient with teaching me the ins and outs of photography. Guys, I really have it made. Jerico is self taught and continues to teach himself daily. He watches videos and reads tutorials for hours on end. I, on the other hand, get the "cliff notes" version of the research. He tells me exactly what I should be doing and how to do it so that I don't have to go through hours to find good & applicable information. It's pretty awesome.
Before I got into photography, I found myself getting frustrated with Jerico because of all the late night editing.. I didn't understand, it was hard for me to believe it actually took that long to edit pictures. Now that I'm into photography, I don't realize the hours we put into it because I'm no longer looking at it from a distance, I'm in it. I sit right next to Jerico as he edits. It still takes hours but I no longer complain about the time, I get it now.
Time flies when you're doing what you love. Don't believe me?? Give it a try!
I also remember listening to Jerico talk about gear with other photographers and to me it was totally a foreign language. I had no idea someone could get so excited about gear!! But now, we can totally geek out together about lenses, camera bodies and all things photography. When Jerico explains a scenario, the lighting, the composition, I can actually understand. Most nights I stay up WAY past my bedtime talking business, potential, ideas, poses, lenses and our future with Jerico!
Going back to the editing part. Like i said, I don't edit, Jerico does. I do all of the communication, scheduling, paperwork, social media, & blogging.. This makes life much easier for both of us. It leaves both of us free to be creative in what we love. Solo photographers have to do all of this one their own. MUCH power to you guys. As for us, neither of us is bogged down with to-do lists. We help each other out and it's never just one person pulling all of the weight.
It's such a blessing that we get to share our lives together & run a business TOGETHER .We're in it- the good, the bad, the ugly, the unknown, the scary, the new, the taxes, all of it.
